The Work

Review the packet. Submit it.
That's the job.

PettyLawsuit prepares the entire packet: complaint, summons, evidence index, defendant info. You verify it's correct and submit it.

Review a pre-filled packet

Every case arrives complete: complaint, summons, evidence, defendant address, filing fee calculated. Your job is to verify accuracy. Wrong court? Missing notary? Form revision? Flag it back to us.

Submit to state court

E-file in jurisdictions that support it. Walk it into the clerk's window where they don't. Upload the stamped copy back to us, and you're paid.

Pick your jurisdictions

You only see cases in the states and counties you've selected. We never assign you something outside your coverage area.

No client contact, ever

You don't talk to plaintiffs. You don't give legal advice. You file what's in the packet. Everything else routes through our support team.

Not a law firm. No legal advice.

PettyLawsuit is a self-help legal technology platform, not a law firm. The customer is the pro se plaintiff on every case. Filers act as clerical submission agents. They confirm the packet is complete and deliver it to the court clerk. Filers do not draft pleadings, give legal advice, choose claim types, represent the plaintiff, or appear in court. No attorney–client relationship is formed between PettyLawsuit, the filer, or the customer.

Common Questions

Am I representing the plaintiff in court?

No. You're acting as a filer. You submit pre-prepared documents to the clerk. You don't appear in court, give legal advice, or speak for the plaintiff. This is administrative filing work, not legal representation.

What if the packet has an error?

Flag it back to us through the dashboard. Our team resolves form issues within 4 business hours and re-releases the case to you. You're never on the hook for content errors.

How does the 48-hour claim lock work?

When you claim a case, it's locked to you for 48 hours. If you haven't submitted (or flagged it) by then, it auto-releases back to the queue. Plenty of time for e-file or a courthouse run.

When do I get paid?

Every Friday. Once you upload the stamped copy and we verify it, the payout queues up for the next Friday transfer to your bank via Stripe Connect.

Do I need to be a licensed attorney?

No, and you shouldn't be. This is filing work, not legal practice. Paralegals, legal assistants, LDAs (in CA), notaries, court runners, and similar roles are who we're built for.

Can I file in multiple states?

Yes. Tell us which states and counties you can physically or electronically file in, and you'll only see cases in those jurisdictions.

Is this the unauthorized practice of law (UPL)?

No. Every case is filed pro se. The customer is the named plaintiff and the one taking legal action. Your role is administrative: confirm the packet is complete and deliver it to the clerk. You don't draft pleadings, choose the claim type, advise the customer, or appear in court. Small claims courts are designed for pro se litigants, and most jurisdictions explicitly allow clerical submission help. We've built the workflow so your work stays firmly on the clerical side of the line.
